To Colligo readers,
Cheers. You are making Colligo possible. To say thanks, through the end of the year, I’m offering discounted paid subscriptions.
I’ll also say a few words about Colligo as 2023 draws to a close. I launched in September this year with a handful of subscribers and to zero fanfare. Frankly, I had no clue what I was doing—it took me a while to get the site itself setup and running. Since these humble beginnings, Colligo has quietly grown to over 600 subscribers and continues to grow almost daily, with a surprising (and much welcome) number of paid subscriptions. I am enormously grateful for the continued and increasing reader support. This site is fully supported by readers, so if you’re in a position to pay for writing you value and find of interest, please consider a discounted paid subscription this holiday season. It helps me keep going!
Paid subscribers also have access to podcasts. I have a series I call “Why Can’t We Do That?” and as many of you know, I’ve released one on commercial supersonic flight. I’m ramping these and other podcasts up in 2024 and will cover at length controlled fusion early in 2024. It doesn’t work, though scientists have been trying since the 1950s, and it reminds me a lot of certain claims made about AI. There are deep insights here about the limits of science. We learn about the world by what we can’t do, too. “Why Can’t We Do That?” is intended in that forward-looking spirit.
Colligo big picture: I have lofty goals for 2024 (assuming the world doesn’t come to an end), and I plan on laying out a broad vision of the dangers of a data-driven society and the challenges presented when attempting to take seriously humanism and humanistic values. We’ve got a lot to cover. From quirky topics like the disappearance of hitch hiking—and what it means—to drill-down analysis of social media and its discontents, cryptocurrency and “Web 3.0,” large language models and the bleeding edge of AI, I’m committed to writing and discussing it all on Colligo. I thank you again, and have a wonderful holiday season.
